10 people can eat a lot of food. We planted a bigger garden this year to try to keep more fresh produce on our table and hopefully grow enough to keep that produce coming into the winter months. We are novice gardeners, but we have had some success in the past, so we planted these again. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, raspberries, asparagus, pea pods, green beans, squash, beets, oregano, basil, lettuce, and spinach. Here are some newbies for us this year. Kale, swiss chard, radishes, onions, celery, garlic, and mint. I think celery is one of the most surprising new ones. Did you know you can regrow your own celery? You just take about 1-2 inches of the base of the celery (the part I used to throw away) and place it in water with the top sticking out. Soon it will start to regrow! We started ours indoors in April in little glass jars on our windowsill. When it got warm, we transplanted them into dirt outside. And just look at those beautiful stalks growing now!
For the past 4 months mom and dad have been having a "Green Smoothie" for breakfast. They are not always green, but it just means that it is plant based (no dairy). We've lost weight and feel more energetic and this has definitely become a lasting change. The kids even enjoy finishing whatever is left of the smoothies that we make--their favorite recipe is below. Even Silas gets in on the action but thinks it tastes even better through a straw. Our favorite addition to our breakfast green smoothie is MINT. We learned it is pretty invasive and will take over if you let it. So now ours is in a deck box that the kids built with dad.
